Lithography is used for printing on any smooth surface.

Lithography is used for printing on any smooth surface. It is an excellent method for traditional printing, as well as for the manufacture of semiconductor and MEMS devices.

The process is based on the natural repulsion of oil and water. An oil based medium is used to place the image to be printed onto the plate surface. This image is then treated with acid to etch the image on. During the printing process water is applied to the entire surface, but only remains on the portions which have not been treated with oil. A roller is then used to apply oil based ink onto the etched portion of the plate.
