The printing press makes it possible to make multiple copies of a particular image onto rectangular paper. While the printing press was originally invented in 1041 in China, most people today are familiar with Johann Gutenberg, the German who invented the modern version of the printing press in the 1450s. LIFE magazine has citied this invention as number one in its list of important events for the millennium. While we have all heard of Gutenberg, Dutch Laurens Janszoon Coster has also been given credit for the invention of the printing press.
